Light Bowgun Guide

Light Bowgun turns mobility into firing time. Choose an ammo type and a bowgun that handles it cleanly, then use the critical-distance reticle, the current magazine, and Rapid Fire Energy to judge the next shot. The present opening may be long enough for a shot, a Chaser Shot, or a Rapid Fire volley, and the weapon's mobility lets you adjust as that opening changes.

That mobility does not remove the weapon's positioning rules. Physical shots lose damage outside their critical-distance band, so check the reticle after every large movement. Unlike Heavy Bowgun, this weapon has no shield, and ranged weapons have no sharpness gauge.

This guide covers Title Update 4. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes for the complete weapon controls; the official manual covers general controls. Combat Mechanics explains why the same shot can produce different damage numbers. The site's Motion Values page is the move-data reference when values are available.

If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.

Ammo, Rapid Fire, Eagle Strike

Choose the ammo first, then compare bowguns that can fire it. Normal ammo works at medium range, Pierce travels through the monster for multiple hits, and Spread works close to the target. These three ammo types are unlimited. Other ammo is limited, so bring its crafting materials and place its recipe on the radial menu when the hunt will need more than the pouch carries.

The gun's recoil, reload, and magazine capacity determine how long each firing commitment lasts and how often the sequence stops for a reload. Judge those values for the selected ammo rather than treating the bowgun's displayed Attack as the whole choice.

In Rapid Fire Mode, Burst Step fires during an evasive dash and keeps the reticle on the same point. It has invulnerability, and it removes almost all recoil from raw Pierce ammo. Holding the fire input lets you chain another Burst Step with a movement and evade input. The dash changes your position, however, so confirm that the reticle still shows critical distance before continuing to fire.

Wyvernblast places a stationary mine that detonates when attacks hit it. Place it where the monster will remain long enough to trigger it, such as during a knockdown; other hunters can trigger it too.

Rapid Fire

Rapid Fire Mode spends Rapid Fire Energy to fire supported ammo in volleys. The gauge recovers over time and when shots land. Outside that spending phase, a standard Chaser Shot follows a shot and restores more energy than an ordinary shot. It is not a free second magazine shot: the follow-up is a two-shot volley that consumes one round, and its longer animation asks for a larger opening than another standard shot.

The basic resource loop is therefore to spend energy on supported ammo, then rebuild the gauge with standard shots and Chaser Shot. Do not force every shot into a fixed rotation. Use the follow-up when the monster gives you time to finish it, and return to Rapid Fire Mode when the gauge can support the next opening.

Eagle Strike

Focus Blast: Eagle Strike is the Focus Strike. It deals a concentrated blast to a wound and consumes that wound. The choice is whether the hunt needs that conversion now.

Keep the wound when the next magazine will still hit the wounded part. Those shots keep the wound damage bonus and, on a qualifying shot hitzone, the wound-only portion of . Spend the wound when the blast finishes a part break, when the monster is about to leave the lane where you can keep shooting that part, or when the immediate Focus Strike damage is worth more than the remaining magazine's wound bonuses.

Do not fire Focus Blast: Eagle Strike only because a wound exists. A wound you can keep shooting is often the better resource until one of those spend conditions appears.

Fight loop

Start by selecting the ammo, the body part it should cross or strike, and the distance that ammo requires. On Chatacabra, for example, the tongue has a shot hitzone of 90 and each foreleg has 65. That makes the exposed tongue the stronger shot target, while a foreleg remains a more available alternative. Pierce also needs enough body behind the entry point to produce its multiple hits; Spread needs room to work close to the target.

While Rapid Fire Energy is available, enter Rapid Fire Mode and use Rapid Fire to keep the volley on the chosen part. Use Burst Step when its dash and invulnerability answer an attack or improve the firing angle, then check critical distance again. When the gauge needs to recover, leave the mode and add Chaser Shot after a standard shot only when the opening can hold its longer animation.

A knockdown gives stationary tools a dependable target. Place Wyvernblast where attacks will trigger it, reload if the current magazine cannot use the opening, and decide whether a wounded part should be spent with Focus Blast: Eagle Strike or kept for following shots. During ordinary movement, reload only when the monster leaves enough time for the gun's reload animation. Craft limited ammo from the radial menu before its reserve reaches zero.

When an attack threatens, choose an evasive direction that does not trade one problem for another. Burst Step preserves the reticle's aim and can cancel back into the firing loop, but its movement can still leave the selected ammo's critical-distance band. Light Bowgun has no shield or guard stance to cover a late commitment.

Skills

Build the weapon around the ammo it will actually fire. Recoil, reload, and capacity come before a small damage increase when poor handling prevents the intended sequence from completing. Weapon skills and armor skills use separate budgets in Wilds, so compare additions within the budget they occupy. Combat Mechanics explains those budgets, wounds, affinity, and critical distance.

Priority skills

Priority skills
Skill or choiceWhy
Recoil, reload, and capacity for the selected ammoThese values set the shot, reload, and magazine rhythm that the hunt must allow.
Matching , , or Match the weapon skill to the physical ammo the gun is built to fire.
Use it only when the selected ammo is supported by Rapid Fire Mode.
Adds affinity, up to the 100% effective limit.
Raises the damage multiplier applied when a direct shot crits.
Adds Attack; levels four and five also multiply Attack.
Adds affinity on shot hitzones of 45 or higher, with another affinity bonus while that part is wounded.

For , the database records 30% affinity at level five on a qualifying hitzone and another 20% while that part is wounded. This is why Focus Blast: Eagle Strike should not consume a wound automatically: the next shots may still be using that extra affinity.

Survival and utility

Light Bowgun's defense comes from ending commitments in time and choosing enough survivability for the hunt. Upgrade the armor itself before expecting decorations to compensate for low Defense. Then choose a skill that answers a failure you actually encounter: for stuns, for repeated blights, or when the problem is timing an evade through an attack. changes how far evasion moves you, so recheck critical distance after using it.

changes the effective-distance range, not the monster's shot hitzone. belongs to a build investing in special ammo rather than ordinary Normal shots. and depend on which shot in the magazine receives their condition, so compare them against the selected gun's actual capacity and reload pattern.

Add when attacks are disrupting other hunters. It does not provide that group benefit in a solo hunt.

This hunt

Hunt-specific defenses belong on the set only when the monster supplies the matching problem. answers disruptive wind, answers tremors, and answers terrain that impedes movement. Status resistance works the same way: equip , , , , , or when that condition is the reason the firing loop is failing.

Skills that look better than they are

Settings

Aim sensitivity changes how quickly the reticle tracks; it does not change shot spread or critical distance. Raise it when you struggle to follow a moving part, and lower it when fine adjustments on a still target overshoot.

Put recipes for the limited ammo you use on the radial menu so you can craft during the hunt. Normal, Pierce, and Spread ammo are unlimited and do not need those crafting shortcuts. Keep the radial entry for the special ammo or status ammo the build actually fires, not for every ammo the gun can load.

If the camera fights the reticle during Burst Step, adjust camera speed separately from aim sensitivity so an evade dash does not yank the aim off the part you meant to keep.
