Heavy Bowgun Guide
Heavy Bowgun wins by choosing where to stand before it fires. First choose a bowgun that supports the main ammo and special ammo you want. The selected ammo's critical-distance band, the length of the current opening, and the state of the Ignition gauge tell you when to keep firing, when to let the weapon return to a guard-ready stance, and whether a long opening or a readable attack deserves special ammo. From a favorable lane, you can land a full burst on the chosen part or answer a predicted attack with an Offset shot.
Physical shot damage falls outside critical distance. The shield can guard automatically while the weapon is drawn, the hunter faces the attack, and the current action allows auto-guard; firing or reloading is therefore a commitment, not simultaneous protection. A timed manual guard can become a Perfect Guard, and supported attacks may lead to a Power Clash. Ignition Mode spends its gauge on the special ammo equipped on the bowgun, such as Wyvernheart's machine-gun barrage and Wyverncounter, a charged Offset shot.
Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl is the weapon's Focus Strike. It rewards accurate aim at a wound or weak point with a piercing explosion, and its charges recover over time without consuming the Ignition gauge.
Title Update 4. Complete weapon controls are in the in-game Hunter's Notes; the official manual covers general controls. Combat Mechanics explains why the same shot hits for different numbers. Every move is in Motion Values.
If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.
Ammo, shield, Ignition
Choose the main ammo before choosing the bowgun. Normal, Pierce, and Spread favor different ranges, while Sticky and elemental ammo ask for different damage skills. A bowgun is a practical match only when it carries the main and special ammo you want and has enough magazine capacity for the intended firing rhythm.
Auto-guard works only while the weapon is drawn, the hunter faces the attack, and the current action allows it. Merely facing the monster does not guarantee protection. Auto-guard cannot become a Perfect Guard; time a manual guard instead. Guarded attacks can still cause chip damage and knockback, and only supported interactions can lead to a Power Clash. reduces the shield's knockback and stamina loss. lets the shield block certain attacks that are normally unblockable.
explicitly strengthens Sticky Ammo, while direct Normal, Pierce, and Spread shots benefit from affinity and the skill matching their ammo type.
There is no sharpness gauge.
Ignition
The Ignition gauge recovers over time in Standard Mode and when shots land. Ignition Mode spends it on the special ammo equipped on the bowgun. The following decisions apply when that bowgun carries Wyvernheart or Wyverncounter.
When equipped, Wyvernheart's power rises as its rapid shots keep landing. Pausing the barrage does not erase the built-up power; the ramp resets when the Ignition gauge empties. The hunter still has to stop the attack and return to a guard-ready stance before relying on auto-guard.
When equipped, Wyverncounter is a fired Offset attack. You can hold its charge while waiting, but you must release the shot so that it meets an eligible attack. Holding the charge through impact does not trigger a clash, while a missed shot leaves you committed in the path of the attack.
Wyvern Howl
Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl is the Focus Strike. Aim it at a wound or weak point to trigger its piercing explosion. Its charges recover over time, so this attack does not compete with Wyvernheart or Wyverncounter for the Ignition gauge.
Save a charge for a wound you can keep in the reticle through the pierce. Firing while the monster turns often dumps the explosion into a thicker flank and wastes the cooldown that would have been ready for the next knockdown.
Fight loop
Fire while the opening is safe, then stop early enough for the weapon to return to a guard-ready stance before the next attack. Reload only when the opening also covers the reload, then resume from critical distance. Manually guard a readable swing to attempt a Perfect Guard, then use the resulting opening for the next magazine. Spend Wyvernheart during a long opening so its successive hits can build power. Use Wyverncounter against an attack whose timing you can read, and release the shot so that it meets the attack. If you cannot read the timing, rely on the shield instead. Follow the prompt when a supported guard starts a Power Clash. Stop firing before a known roar if it would otherwise interrupt the commitment. Put recipes for limited ammo on the radial menu so crafting fits between firing windows instead of forcing a tent restock.
At the start of the hunt, choose a part with a favorable shot hitzone and establish the range for the selected ammo. On Chatacabra, for example, the tongue has a shot hitzone of 90 and the forelegs have 65. Use Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl when a wound or weak point presents a clean line for the Focus Strike.
During a knockdown, fire a full magazine or spend Ignition Mode while the target will remain still long enough for the special attack. Re-establish the selected ammo's range before the monster stands.
When an attack interrupts the loop, stop firing early enough to return to a guard-ready stance, use Wyverncounter if you can read the attack, or make a long roll.
Skills
Build around one main ammo type, then add only the conditional skills whose triggers fit the hunt. Eat before every hunt, and upgrade armor when incoming damage leaves too little room for recovery. Getting Started explains meals and pouch preparation. Combat Mechanics explains wounds, , critical distance, and the two skill budgets.
Core
For a direct-shot build, begin with the row matching Normal, Pierce, or Spread. Sticky and elemental builds replace that row with their own damage skills.
| Offensive (weapon) | Why |
|---|---|
| Recoil, reload, and capacity that make the ammo usable | These properties determine how long each firing and reload commitment lasts. |
| Matching , , or | Raises the physical ammo type the gun actually fires. |
| Reduces shield knockback and stamina loss; higher levels provide more reduction. | |
| Increases critical-hit damage for a direct-shot build. | |
| and | Raise affinity and Attack for direct-shot damage. |
| Offensive (armor) | Why |
|---|---|
| Adds affinity when direct shots hit a qualifying weak point or wound. | |
| Raises Attack and affinity while the monster is enraged. |
| Defensive | Why |
|---|---|
| Grill every hunt | A meal adds health and stamina before the first firing commitment. |
| Armor upgrades | More Defense reduces the cost of a missed guard or late disengage. |
| Matching elemental resistance | Use it when the monster's elemental attacks, rather than physical hits, are causing the failures. |
| Has a chance to reduce incoming damage. | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents a stun from leaving this slow weapon exposed to a follow-up attack. |
Add in a group to prevent hit reactions between hunters; it has no teammate interaction to prevent in solo play. Keep the firing lane clear even when the skill is active.
The following skills are often added but are not required:
| Skill | Why | Budget |
|---|---|---|
| Raises supported special ammo, including Ignition attacks and Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl; it does not raise ordinary ammo. | Weapon | |
| Raises Attack after a precisely timed guard, so use it only when Perfect Guard is a consistent part of the fight loop. | Weapon | |
| Lets the shield block ordinarily unblockable attacks and reduces guarded damage; it does not make an incompatible action guard-ready. | Weapon | |
| Extends critical range; at level 3 it also raises attacks made within critical range, but it does not change a monster's shot hitzone. | Weapon | |
| Improves reload speed and ammo power when the bowgun is fully loaded, so partial reloads do not satisfy its defining condition. | Weapon | |
| Adds affinity from the fourth shot and raises the fourth and sixth shots; the magazine must reach those shots to receive the later benefits. | Weapon | |
| Consecutive hits build temporary Attack and elemental Attack, which suits a firing window long enough to keep landing hits. | Armor | |
| Raises Attack while health is full; any unrecovered damage disables it. | Armor | |
| Adds affinity after stamina has remained full; rolls interrupt that condition. | Armor | |
| Temporarily raises elemental Attack and status buildup after recovery from a blight or abnormal status. | Armor | |
| Raises Attack after a faint, so it has no effect until the hunt has already gone wrong. | Armor |

Comfort
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Increases the amount restored when recovering health. | |
| Speeds up meat eating and item consumption. | |
| The red portion of the health bar returns faster. | |
| Adds Defense and improves elemental resistances at higher levels. | |
| Protects against elemental blights without depending on one matching resistance. | |
| Survive one qualifying lethal hit; the next hit can still cause a faint. | |
| Shortens the recharge time of mantles and other specialized tools. | |
| Protects against roars that could otherwise cancel a committed attack. | |
| Extends roll invulnerability; it does not make the shield rise sooner. | |
| Extends the long roll; recheck critical distance after the longer movement. | |
| Sometimes uses a consumable without removing it from the pouch. |
Styles
| Style | Skills |
|---|---|
| Sticky | Uses , which explicitly strengthens Sticky Ammo. |
| Elemental ammo | Uses the elemental attack skill matching the monster's weakness. |
| Ignition | Uses and steady aim so successive Wyvernheart shots keep building power. |
This hunt
These skills need a monster, environment, or hunt plan that will activate them. Add one only when its condition occurs often enough to change the fight.
| Skill | When |
|---|---|
| Makes wounds easier to inflict and can add non-elemental damage. A wound on a part with a shot hitzone of at least 45 can also activate 's additional wound affinity, which reaches 20% at level 5. | |
| Prevents wind pressure from interrupting fire. | |
| Prevents ground tremors from interrupting sustained fire. | |
| Raises Attack while a blight is active, benefiting every shot fired before that blight ends. | |
| Improves flash attacks and items; use it only when the target can be disrupted by flashes. | |
| Raises the damage of explosive items, including barrel bombs used in a planned wake-up. | |
| Prevents water or oilsilt from disrupting a carefully chosen firing position. |
A hunt can also make , , , , , or more important than filling a remaining slot with a general Core skill. Dung Pods are in the pouch; Wilds has no Dungmaster skill.
Skills that look better than they are
- Do not treat auto-guard as a Perfect Guard; only a timed manual guard can produce that result.
- changes a successful guard's knockback and stamina cost; it cannot make an incompatible action guard-ready.
- does not increase the damage of Normal ammo.
- Do not fire Focus Blast: Wyvern Howl merely because a charge is available; aim it at a wound or weak point so it can trigger the piercing explosion.
- improves critical-hit damage, whereas explicitly strengthens Sticky Ammo.
- Do not start Ignition Mode when the monster is about to turn away from the firing lane.
- does not turn a hard hide into a favorable target.
- needs a slide before it can add affinity, so it does nothing in a firing loop that never uses that movement.
- supports mounting rather than the ordinary ranged firing loop.
- increases the attention drawn by attacks. Equip it only when deliberately asking the monster to face the Heavy Bowgun firing position.
- reduces stamina depletion only at 40% health or lower. It has no effect during the ordinary full-health firing loop.
Settings
Aim sensitivity changes how quickly the reticle tracks a target; it does not change shot spread. Use Manual automatic sheathe if automatic sheathing disrupts the intended drawn, guard-ready state. Add crafting recipes for limited ammo to the radial menu. Normal, Pierce, and Spread ammo are unlimited, so they do not need those recipes.
Keep the camera high enough that the weak point stays clear of the monster's body while you track. A low camera that rides behind the flank makes it easy to dump Pierce into meat after a sidestep, even when the reticle still looks centered.
