Switch Axe Guide
Switch Axe carries momentum through every transformation. Build the Switch Gauge in axe mode, spend it on sword attacks that build Amped State, and track whether the monster is attacking or giving you time to commit. Fluid morph attacks carry that cycle through an Offset, a Sword Counter, or evasive movement until a long opening permits Full Release Slash and its chain of phial explosions.
You cannot hold a shield guard. Morphing can move you away from an attack, while the Offset and Sword Counter can answer attacks whose timing you recognize. Zero Sum Discharge is another Amped option, but remaining attached also means accepting the danger around the monster.
This guide reflects Title Update 4. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes for weapon controls; the official manual covers common controls and Focus Mode. Combat Mechanics explains why the same swing can hit for different numbers. Every move is documented in Motion Values.
If this weapon is new to you, try it in the Training Area first. Use the in-game Hunter's Notes to practice its basic attacks; this guide explains how to connect them into a hunt.
Gauge, Amped, and Power Axe
Axe attacks fill the Switch Gauge, and sword attacks consume it. The divider on the gauge marks the amount needed to morph into sword mode. If the gauge is below that divider, attempting the morph reloads instead, so morph back to axe before sword mode empties the gauge when you need a clean transition.
Sword attacks also fill the Amp Gauge. Filling it activates Amped State, which adds the weapon's phial effect to most sword attacks and unlocks Amped finishers. The Switch Gauge and Amp Gauge therefore answer different questions: one determines how long you can remain in sword mode, while the other determines whether its phial effects are active. extends the powered-up state.
Heavy Slam after Wild Swing activates Power Axe, which strengthens axe attacks and makes them build the Switch Gauge faster. A successful Axe Offset Rising Slash can lead directly to the same Heavy Slam, letting a defensive read improve the next gauge-building phase.
Morphing Slash moves while changing mode. Aim that movement out of the attack's path before impact; the morph itself does not guard or counter the hit. makes these defining transitions faster and, from level 2 onward, stronger.
The Focus Strike attacks a wound and begins a morph combination. The follow-up inputs change mode, so pay attention to the mode in which you want the sequence to end before choosing them. Other hunters can also consume the wound, so the opportunity may not remain available.
Each Switch Axe has a fixed phial. Power phials support raw damage, while Power Element phials support an elemental plan when the weapon's element matches the part you intend to hit. Status phials exchange that direct-damage focus for their named buildup. Choose the weapon and phial together rather than treating the phial as an interchangeable attachment.
Offset and Sword Counter
Axe Offset Rising Slash must meet an eligible monster attack. Time the upswing so the weapon and attack collide. A successful Offset can lead to Heavy Slam and Power Axe, or to a morphing slash that enters sword mode. If the timing misses, the upswing does not protect you from the incoming hit.
Sword Counter Rising Slash is a timed counter, not a guard. Meet the incoming attack during the counter window to avoid knockback and produce the stronger version of the first hit. You can still take damage, so success does not make an unsafe health total safe. changes guarding and therefore does not improve this counter.
Full Release Slash
While Amped State is active, Full Release Slash turns a long opening into two blade hits followed by multiple phial explosions. Its windup and full sequence require the monster to remain in reach, and finishing it returns you to axe mode. Use Focus Mode to keep the sequence aimed at the intended part, and do not begin it during a flinch that will end before the later hits land.
Zero Sum Discharge instead attaches you to the monster. The attachment moves with the monster, but it does not remove the risk of incoming damage. Releasing early produces a weaker explosion than completing the sequence, so trade that damage for safety when the monster's next action makes remaining attached dangerous.
Fight loop
Build the Switch Gauge with axe attacks. If the opening supports Wild Swing into Heavy Slam, activate Power Axe to improve axe damage and speed the next refill. Morph into sword mode with gauge to spare, then use sword attacks to fill the Amp Gauge.
While attacking, keep the monster's next action in the decision. In axe mode, use Axe Offset Rising Slash only for an eligible attack whose timing you can meet. In sword mode, use Sword Counter Rising Slash when you can meet its counter window. Morph out of the path, hop, or roll when neither timed answer is appropriate.
Once Amped State is active, continue with sword attacks during short openings and reserve Full Release Slash for an opening long enough to hold its complete sequence. Choose Zero Sum Discharge only when you want the attached sequence and can accept the damage risk. When the Switch Gauge approaches the morph threshold, return to axe before an attempted sword morph becomes a reload.
Skills
Wilds separates weapon skills from equipment skills. Start with skills whose conditions match the actions you actually use, then spend the other budget on damage conditions you can maintain or protection against the attacks that stop your sequence. Getting Started covers meals and preparation, while Combat Mechanics explains wounds and the two skill budgets.
Build priorities
| Weapon skill | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Speeds morphing at every level and increases morph-attack power from level 2 onward, directly improving frequent mode changes. | |
| Extends Amped State, giving you more time to use phial-enhanced sword attacks and Amped finishers. | |
| and | supplies affinity; adds value only to attacks that actually critical. |
| Raises attack without requiring a hitzone or hunt state. | |
| Matching elemental attack | Supports a Power Element weapon when its element matches the target part. |
| Equipment skill | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Adds affinity when any attack reaches a weak point, with additional affinity while that point is wounded. | |
| Rewards successive hits; Amped sword strings and the multi-hit Full Release Slash can meet that condition. | |
| Adds attack and affinity only while a large monster is enraged. | |
| Makes wounds easier to inflict and can add non-elemental damage as wound buildup accumulates. | |
| Sometimes reduces incoming damage, which helps when a counter or committed finisher still lets damage through. | |
| Lv 3 | Prevents stun, keeping one mistake from turning into a forced follow-up hit. |
Add in multiplayer when attacks between hunters are interrupting the group. It has no teammate interaction to prevent in a solo hunt.
Keep a color
Sword attacks still consume sharpness even though they do not bounce. Choose a sharpness skill according to how the build restores or preserves its current color.
| Skill | What it does |
|---|---|
| Extends a sharpness gauge that has unused capacity. | |
| Prevents sharpness loss on critical hits, so its value follows the build's affinity. | |
| Prevents sharpness loss for a fixed time after sharpening. | |
| Gives attacks a chance not to consume sharpness. | |
| Shortens the whetstone sequence instead of preserving sharpness during attacks. |
Comfort
| Skill | What problem it addresses |
|---|---|
| Extends evasion invulnerability when you avoid an attack instead of countering it. | |
| Moves evasions farther; check that the extra distance does not carry the next morph away from its target. | |
| Increases health restored by healing. | |
| Shortens meat and item consumption. | |
| Restores the red portion of the health gauge faster. | |
| Adds defense and, at higher levels, elemental resistance. | |
| Protects against elemental blights. | |
| Shortens specialized-tool recharge time. | |
| Prevents the matching roar level from interrupting a committed attack. | |
| Sometimes consumes food or drink without removing the item. |
Styles
| Style | What changes |
|---|---|
| Power Element | Match the weapon's element to the target part and use the corresponding elemental attack skill. |
| Offset | Spend more time in axe mode when the monster offers eligible attacks you can reliably meet, then use Heavy Slam to enter Power Axe or morph directly to sword. |
| Zero Sum | Use the attached discharge only when following the monster is worth accepting the damage risk around it. |
This hunt
Situational protection is useful when a specific effect repeatedly interrupts the actions you chose the build to support.
| Skill | When it fits |
|---|---|
| The target's wind pressure is interrupting attacks. | |
| The target's ground tremors are interrupting attacks. | |
| Water, oilsilt, or streams are impairing movement. | |
| The hunt rewards earlier part breaks or stronger wound-destroying Focus Strikes. | |
| More effective flash attacks create useful openings against the target. | |
| The plan uses explosive items; it does not increase the weapon's phial explosions. |
Use the matching resistance when bleeding, blastblight, poison, paralysis, sleep, webbing, or frostblight is the condition disrupting the hunt. Those skills answer a target-specific problem rather than the Switch Axe itself.
Common traps
- Do not treat Zero Sum Discharge as an automatically safer damage dump. Attachment follows the monster but leaves you exposed to damage around it.
- does not improve Sword Counter Rising Slash because that move is a counter rather than a guard.
- Do not empty the Switch Gauge without a plan for returning to axe. An attempted sword morph below the threshold reloads instead of performing the attack.
- Do not begin Full Release Slash merely because Amped State is active. The monster must also remain in reach long enough for the later explosions to land.
Settings
Focus Mode aims attacks toward the camera. Use it to keep the morph Focus Strike and committed discharge sequences on the intended part.
During Amped discharge commits, nudge the camera so the head or wound you mean to finish on stays centered before the morph locks your facing. A camera left on the body after an axe approach often lands the sword finish on a weaker zone than you planned.
